Along a rapidly developing stretch of 10th Avenue in Chelsea, right across the street from the High Line, there’s a very cool boutique called Story. It has a nifty business model: their collection of goods- including clothes, housewares and gourmet products changes monthly and is inspired by different themes, kind of like a magazine putting out different stories every edition. The May collection is especially compelling because if features products that support environmental or humane causes. I loved the scented candles by Apolis, a brand that works with craftspeople from around the world and helps support their communities. Also, my eyes were drawn to a series of elegant yet rugged leather bags and bracelets by Revisit, which designs and manufactures in America using eco-hides. Right by the entrance is a quaint wooden cart selling coffee drinks by TOMS. Yes, the popular makers of ethical, gaucho-inspired shoes. They just launched Toms Roasting Co., an endeavor to sell fair-trade coffee while helping to provide clean water to people in parts of Africa and Latin America (where the beans are sourced). Nice, eh? I heard it though the grapevine that they’re planning to open coffee shops in New York City this summer.
