After the sad news that Union Square Cafe (one of New York City’s great classic restaurants, run by Danny Meyer) will be closing soon, it’s nice to see a pleasant arrival to the area. The Pavilion opened this summer on the north side of Union Square, inside a renovated old pavilion that had remained empty for years. This breezy restaurant has an “indoor” space that’s mostly unenclosed, framed by columns and potted plants, plus several tables in the open air. There’s lunch, brunch and dinner, and the menu is appropriately driven by market-fresh ingredients. Check it out before it closes in October; this is a warm-weather spot.
